The Henry Ford Centennial Library and the Dearborn Police will be taking the mystery out of lie detector tests at a free program set for 7 p.m., March 10.
Lt. Neil S. Myres from the Investigative Division of the Dearborn Police Department will present current issues and technological advances in the field of Forensic Psychophysiology.
We’ve all heard about lie detector tests in police investigations and, in some instances, it is used for job interviews.
This special presentation is part of the Everyone’s Reading program, which is a communitywide reading initiative sponsored by the libraries in Oakland and Wayne counties. The reading program promotes community dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book.
“Presumed Innocent” by Scott Turow is the current book selection. Copies are available for check out at any Dearborn Public Library.

The Dearborn Public Schools Education Foundation will hold their annual Mardi Gras Fundraiser on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, from 3:30 to 9:00 pm at the Dearborn Hills Golf Course, 1300 S. Telegraph. The fun filled evening will include entertainment, food, soft drinks, prizes, and a silent auction.

From 7 p.m.-midnight on Saturday, Feb. 20, the shelter will host a night of gambling fun at Fr. Patrick O’Kelley’s Knights of Columbus at 23663 Park Street in Dearborn. This Western-themed event (cowboy hats encouraged!) will include chances to win at casino classics like Texas Hold ‘Em Poker, Black Jack and Let It Ride. Games will feature cash payouts for winners – all while helping to raise funds to care for homeless animals. Yee haw!

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Dearborn will officially kick off on Feb. 3 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave.
Community members are invited to attend the Kickoff Celebration in Studio A at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center to launch Dearborn’s 2010 Relay season and the organization’s theme of “celebrating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.”
The Kickoff will feature speakers from our community and will honor cancer survivors and caregivers. Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr., will be the opening speaker.
Registration and dinner, donated by Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina, will begin at 6 p.m. Event chair, Denise Abdullah, and committee member Morris Goodman, both cancer survivors, will host the festivities.

What do you do when children misbehave? Parents who are interested in learning how to manage a variety of situations that arise with their children are invited to hear nationally recognized educator and speaker Chick Moorman on Monday, January 18, 2010. The free workshop will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Dearborn Heights Montessori Center, which is located at 466 N. John Daly in Dearborn Heights.

“Mr. Moorman is highly regarded for helping both parents and educators,” said Kay Neff, head of Dearborn Heights Montessori Center. “This will be his third visit to our school, and we look forward to the wealth of information that he always brings to our staff and families.”
Moorman will present “The Five Voices of Enlightened Parenting,” regarding a variety of techniques that parents can use to help guide children through the daily challenges of family life. According to Moorman, when children misbehave, it can become a teaching moment for parents.
Although consequences or punishment may be the appropriate response to some misbehavior, Moorman will talk about other approaches that work better and create lasting improvement. He offers parents five “voices” that they can use to help their children through difficult situations.
Chick Moorman is a distinguished educator and captivating speaker who has addressed more than 300,000 parents and educators while conducting more than 2,000 talks on raising and educating children. He is noted for his humor and enthusiasm, as well as his ability to deliver practical ideas. He is the author of more than a dozen books and teaching resources. He writes monthly parenting columns for publications across the United States, and is a regular contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books.

There was a standing-room-only audience at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan on December 10 when author Alia Malek came to speak about her new book, A Country Called Amreeka: Arab Roots, American Stories (Free Press; 2009; $25), which revisits key moments in recent American history as experienced by Arab Americans.
C-SPAN2 cameras were there, and at 5:15 p.m. Eastern this Sunday, January 10, Malek’s talk will premiere on the cable channel’s “Book TV” program. In A Country Called Amreeka, Malek weaves the stories of the Arab American community into the story of America, using lively and moving narratives of real people, including several metro Detroit residents, who have lived history all around the country. Among the book’s metro Detroit subjects are Ron Amen, recently appointed development director for the City of Dearborn Heights; Ahmad Chebbani, chairman of the Dearborn-based American Arab Chamber of Commerce; Amal Berry-Brown of Comerica Bank; and attorneys Michael Berry and Bill Swor.
Alia Malek is an author and civil rights lawyer. Born in Baltimore to Syrian immigrant parents, she began her legal career as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. After working in the legal field in the U.S., Lebanon and the West Bank, Malek, who has degrees from Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, earned her master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. Her reportage has appeared in Salon, The Columbia Journalism Review and The New York Times. A Country Called Amreeka is her first book.
The barrios of Southwest Detroit have been fertile ground for several generations of Latin music acts, some of whom remained on their home territory and others who went on to national and international fame.
In the sizzling conclusion to the Fall 2009 season of Global Thursdays at the Arab American National Museum, an unprecedented gathering of performers from Southwest Detroit – including beloved veterans and fresh faces – will light up the night with a once-in-a-lifetime Southwest Detroit Super Session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 17.
“Though most of us have played with each other separately at one time or another, this is the first time ever we have played as a collective and the first time that musicians from such a wide range of musical styles have collaborated to showcase the diversity found in Latino cultures,” says Ozzie Rivera, who is co-producing the Southwest Detroit Super Session with Ismael Duran.

The program will spotlight Latin American and Caribbean music, as well as American music with Latin influences. Audiences can expect to hear songs written by artists from Celia Cruz to Carlos Santana, alongside Chilean folk, salsa, merengue and Latin jazz.
It wouldn’t be a true Latin music experience without dancing. Several Latin dance pros will be on hand to perform flamenco and Afro Cuban styles while encouraging the audience to get out of their seats. Additionally, young dancers and musicians from Detroit-based COMPAS (Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest) will be featured in a new-talent showcase.
“The Southwest Detroit Super Session also highlights the little-known fact that the Detroit Latino community has been a hotbed of musical creativity and energy for decades,” says Rivera. “Many former Latino Detroiters have gone on to be part of Grammy-winning albums and popular TV shows,” he says.
