Artist Kate Moynihan at Village Frame in Dearborn

Kate Moynihan's "Party Birds"

This Saturday, May 21, Village Picture Frame and Art Gallery in Dearborn will present artist Kate Moynihan, her “Party Birds” and other paintings between noon and 5 p.m.

Art Gallery owner Thomas Clark says patrons on Saturday can enter their name to win a framed Tulip Burst print by being present at 4 p.m. for the drawing. He also will have free refreshments. Clark’s gallery is located in the West Village Commons on Michigan Avenue, between Military and Howards streets.

Growing older without regrets is the motto artist Moynihan has followed for two decades by leaving a secure job as a registered nurse and plunging into the business world as a painter. “I didn’t want my career to pass and always wonder ‘what if.’” Twenty years later Moynihan is not only doing what she loves but is successful, as well.

Moynihan credits her prosperity to being willing to learn new things and adapt to the changing art profession and economy.

With the present economy, Moynihan has diversified the size of her paintings, now offering small 4″ canvas. The smaller shapes still hold true to her interest in the use of texture and the effects of color relationships she credits from her nursing education.

Moynihan achieves texture in her watercolors by layering a rice paper. Her oil paintings are thickly painted using only a palette knife and omitting brushes altogether. The textures enhance her impressionist style that she incorporates into her landscape and floral paintings. Being a Michigan native, the state offers her unlimited inspiration. Her signature motif is the White Birch Tree.

Adapting to the changing art profession, Moynihan stays current with technology. Technology has turned the art industry into a different way of doing business. One of the most pronounced changes is the introduction of a gilcee print, a French term meaning fine mist. Although the technique of printing a giclee print has been around more than 15 years, it hasn’t been until the last decade that the process has become the front runner, replacing the once popular, lithograph printing process.

For more than 10 years, Moynihan has been self publishing giclee prints of her originals at her gallery. The gallery is located in the heart of downtown Holland main street shopping district.

“I get inspired by the current trends of the gift industry. Constantly changing trends push me to grow and paint new images.”

The newest print releases are Moynihan’s “Party Birds.” The bright colors and whimsical painting of the birds radiate a pick-me-up feeling, hence the title. The fun loving birds are a new direction for Moynihan, but she remarks, “we all need to smile, and that’s exactly what the birds make you do.”

Sadly, this is still one of the most underappreciated businesses in Dearborn. For all of the blather about Fatburger and piano bars, businesses like Tom’s are what really drives a downtown business district.

Sox: agree with you 100 percent. Great business and nice owner.
