Final Credits Roll for Dearborn Theater . . .

The building that was once home to first-run motion picture films on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn is now but a pile of rubble.
Dearborn Theater, which later became Showcase Cinemas, is expected to be replaced with a Hampton Inn hotel, if all goes according to plan.
Construction on a Sonic burgers still is slated to begin this summer next door to the razed theater. City officials say construction likely will begin once the theater site is cleared. The front of the building, shown in this photo, was taken down late last week. For our earlier story, click HERE.

i remember this being one of only a few places i ever saw a movie as a child…westborn and ford-tel and (the old) fairlane theater (with the tunnel) being the others…i recall how excited we were when they expanded it…then it was all down hill…it didn’t even feel like it was in dearborn anymore…it suddenly became to dangerous to use the turn lane onto southbound telegraph…tearing it down was long overdue…

It is nice to finally see some progress.
Has anyone heard what is going on with the Preferred Developer status. At the last council meeting it was stated that it was to be settled by June 30th.
Any info out there?

I don’t understand how a hotel/motel can be built there when there is one, still unfinished, almost directly next door, with the Red Roof Inn across Michigan. Is there really enough of a demand for this much motel capacity?

Cloe:
From the original article:
“The developer for the proposed Hampton Inn is Ned Hakim and right now he has his hands full getting his Holiday Inn Express readied for travelers.”
Hakim Fakhoury may be the preferred developer you’re mentioning, but he has nothing to do with the property for the Hampton Inn.
Dearborn Observer:
I could be wrong, but since these hotels are nicer than the ones west of it in Inkster and room rates are lower than the Hyatt and The Henry (aka Ritz), perhaps these two hotels are a nice middle of the road option for travelers.

He must have his hands full getting the Holiday Inn Express ready – seems this has been in progress forever.

I agree Donna. I guess it’s just that so many of us remember when west downtown Dearborn and the areas from Brady to Gulley Road were vibrant and now there are so many vacancies in old AND newer buildings that……………….

Little off the subject but I see that the Deli on Military (across from S.Heart) has a for sale sign in the window- Sorry she couldn’t make it in that spot.
