Woronchak New Chair of Wayne County Commission

Commissioner Gary Woronchak , D-Dearborn, has been elected chairman of the Wayne County Commission for the 2011-12 term.

Gary Woronchak

Woronchak was elected at the commission’s organizational meeting Tuesday, Jan. 4. He succeeds Edward Boike Jr., D-Taylor, who served as chair for the previous term and retired from the commission at the end of December. The 15-member commission elects its officers at the first meeting of each two-year term.

Also elected to leadership positions Tuesday were Commissioner Alisha Bell, D-Detroit, who will serve as vice chair, and Commissioner Laura Cox, R-Livonia, who was elected vice chair pro tem. The 15-member commission elects its officers at the first meeting of each two-year term.

As chairman, Woronchak will be responsible for the commission’s $9.4 million budget and its employees, as well as scheduling and running meetings and appointing members to standing committees and special task forces.

Woronchak, 55, is beginning his fourth term on the commission, representing Dearborn, Allen Park and Melvindale. Prior to being elected to the commission in 2004, he served three terms in the state House of Representatives. Before government service, he worked more than 20 years as a newspaper editor.

We finally have a true leader representing Dearborn, unlike O’Reilley who is an embarrassment to Dearborn. Good Luck Gary, and represent us the way u know how to.

  2. LOUIE says:

Couldn’t be prouder of having Gary as a rep. of Dearborn. For too long we have had zeroes like O’Reilley representing us. I couldn’t agree with you more John, now we have a person we can be proud to represent Dearborn — keep up the good work for Dearborn Gary.

  3. South of Cherry Hill says:

Good thing Gary is from Dearborn, otherwise Tommy Boy could find it very difficult sledding in the Hometown of Henry Ford.

Play nice to those above you Tom for there are a finite number of octogenarian Polish Catholic widows…err…..votes, out there.

  4. Donna Hay says:

    How about Gary for Mayor??

  5. Jamie says:

First smart, logical thing you have said on this board in a long time Donna. Lets get the campaign underway.

  6. Dearborn Observer says:

Regarding the comment above about ‘octogenarian Polish Catholic widows…’ above, remember there are a finite amount of any kind of voter ‘out there.’ Even the kind you seem to favor, S.O.C.H.

I also think Gary Woronchak would make a good mayor. O’Reilly has shown that he can’t stand up to the people who peddle hatred in this town, and has actually joined them in hating Christians. Will Woronchak bring sanity back to us?

South of Cherry Hill – I was confused about your comments. Could you please verify who “Tommy Boy” is and why he “could find it very difficult sledding in the Hometown of Henry Ford” and what “octogenarian Polish Catholic widows/votes” means.

I guess that I am not as savvy as you are. I didn’t get the meaning behind your words.

I thought that the article was about Gary Woronchak.

  8. Just Asking says:

If Woronchak ran for Dearborn mayor, would he have to give up his county commissioner seat? When our former commissioner, Susan Hubbard, ran for another office, she gave up that seat and it took her many years to get back into the political arena with her recent election to the Wayne County circuit court.

Although Wayne County commissioner is a part time position, it pays handsomely–“…..Wayne County commissioners salaries start at $68,676, and chairs of the eight standing committees pull in an extra $4,000…” (per the Detroit News), with great benefits and another $100,000 or so per commissioner to staff his or her office.
