    1) We are broke, 2) We just bought a new City Hall w/out selling the old City Hall 1st, 3) We just passed a millage, 4) We just built new “Wi-Fi” State o’ The Art Cabins at Camp Milford, 5) The Mayor says we have to close the Small Pools and libraries because we are broke, 6) We just hired “WAR” to play the annual Rain-Soaked-Beer-Bash Carnival attended, mostly, by non-residents. We let BK off the hook, we have 2 huge empty parking structures, and FATBURGER really isn’t coming soon? Why are we receiving mixed-messages from our City Leaders???? Give up the new City Hall, “WAR” and the Beer fest, and the Wi-Fi Cabins – and keep the Pools and Libraries!!

  2. Donna Hay says:

How right you are – but who in the hell is WAR???

  3. 420Lisa says:

Believe me, I’m no fan of our friends in City Hall. But I very much support recreational activities within the community.

I’ve lived in Dearborn for several years–near Michigan and Monroe. But I grew up in Berkley. I have fond memories of free summer concerts at the football field, parades, library activities, the carnival, playing softball all summer long, swimming at the pool, and the “parks and rec” programs at all the school parks. Thankfully, I grew up in a city that cared enough about me to make the investment in my personal development. Dearborn could take a page from their book.

I see the Homecoming events as a tool to strengthen Dearborn’s economy and create stable neighborhoods. I see kids and families having a good time–and yes, I see a few booze hounds too. I also see increased foot traffic along Michigan Avenue–which can’t be a bad thing for the merchants. As long as it’s done in a fiscally responsible manner, I’m all for events that bring people and their money to this city.

WAR, what is it good for?
What are Eddie Money and K C And The Sunshine Band unavailable that weekend?
And nobody can sell tags at the center after 6 but we have the money to hire War?

  5. Sameasiteverwas says:

Maybe if we close a few more pools and write more parking tickets we can afford to have The Rolling Stones or Kid Rock play at Homecoming next year.

  6. Chris Gaines says:

    No Wally Duda Polka?

  7. Lookatitthisway says:

Not a bad thing at all Lisa. I think the point people are making is that they are closing the pools and libraries and telling the citizens the city doesn’t have any money, then they turn around and spend thousands on other things.
For all the brand new vehicles I see, I think the savings on that alone could fund a lot of other projects. I saw a new looking parking enforcement truck writing tickets for public service day. All the recreation and city vehicles I’ve seen look new. When I was a kid the recreation trucks were all very old. They kept them for years, but there was money to fund the recreation here. Now they are all driving around in brand new vehicles and crying that there is no money to fund the pools and other recreation events. The only vehicles that really need to be new are police and fire. I don’t think it would be a huge deal if the truck bringing gimp to the playground was in the shop for a day or two. I don’t think people would say the negative things about homecoming if they had their pools and libraries too.

  8. Bobo says:

..it just keeps getting worse. Cmon Dearborn…War?? You tryin’ to put everybody to sleep? The automotive economy is back. Learn to budget your city better. The housing is worthless, the ghetto people have moved in due to the prior, paid parking is a disaster, almost ever year for the last 20 you raise taxes because you can’t budget the books. The city is going to complete shit!

  9. Lifetime Resident says:

When it comes to the vehicles, that’s pretty much what the city IS doing. DPW is running around in more trucks that are a decade old (usually the service life of city vehicles or at least DPW vehicles). There may be even a few that are a couple decades old.

But there are two brand new Interceptors sitting over in the Motor Transport lot. That has to be easily $70k worth of Taurus. I guess those lightly used Crown Vics that are just a couple years old need to be replaced…

  10. Eastside Rob says:

Did i.q.s suddenly drop off? No doubt a bank or someone with deep pockets is financing WAR as has been done for decades at Homecoming. So drop this “our terminally broke city can’t afford this” baloney. And Bobo, if you’re such a blatant racist, take your frightened little butt out of town and head north into the thumb with all the other scared white boys. And Donna, get a musical clue please. WAR has been one of the greatest rhythmn sections in rock history for over forty years. Bobo, if you think WAR is going to put you to sleep, you must be comatose.

  11. CheeseRoyal says:

Eastside Rob – Take your plastic lawn chair, your pack of cigarettes, a six-pack of Colt-45, and enjoy your rain-soaked War concert for ONE NIGHT, on the slippery hill at Ford Field! People that accualy live here and pay taxes would prefer an entire Summer, w/their families – swimming in their neighborhood pools and utilizing City libraries. It is possible a “bank finances WAR” as you say? But does the bank, also, cover cleanup, OT for Police and Fire, Liability Insurance, Traffic Control, etc.? I doubt it. Attendance is free? The Mayor says we are broke? And he just purchased a new City Hall? The old City Hall hasn’t been sold. He wants to close Pools and Libraries? We can’t afford a new City Hall before we sell the old one? We can’t afford a Carnival attended by, mostly, non-residents, and call it “Homecoming” – nobody that moved from Dearborn, to Northville – is coming back to watch WAR, believe me! Mostly people like you and your Colt-45 and your Summer Teeth – 1) some are in, 2 )some are out, and 3) some are on the table!

  12. User4771 says:

First off every dollar the city gets in donations to fund Homecoming is one less dollar out there that can be donated to save the pools and libraries. So yes it is a choice of weather we want to continue this pointless beer bash and electioneering opportunity or invest in our children. As for the terminally broke idea, that was created by our mayor and not anyone here

  13. Eastside Rob says:

Cheeseroyal- I live on the eastside of Dearborn and have for 50 years.I go to city libraries at least three times a week and was very mad when they closed Snow library. All four libraries should be opened ten hours a day, seven days a week.I think Homecoming should be bi-annual.I sure don’t want to see any of our pools closed. And as someone who works for the city, I see first-hand how reduced spending in the public service sector has lessened the beauty of our city.Oh,by the way, I hate Colt-45, still have my original teeth and still think WAR is a great band.

  14. Lifetime Resident says:

Entire families swimming at the pools? Since when???? And since when did entire families use the libraries?? Last time I was at a library it was the occasional college student/older person looking for a book/daycare center….

  15. CheeseRoyal says:

My bad Eastside – your not as bad as I thought. We can have a cold beer and talk this over some day.

  16. Lookatitthisway says:

Lifetime, things have changed and YES entire families use the small pools now. You may not have been there in a while. I know years ago it was all kids, but in the later 90’s more parents started to go up there with their kids. Times have changed. There were tons of entire families up there on the 4th of July and if you ever went to the floatie nights and pool rentals you would see lots of families there too. I think if the pools were open longer on the 90 degree days you would also see more parents up there after work.

  17. Royale With Cheese says:

Yeah, come on down to soak your body in some nice fecal stew that’s been brewing in the hot 100 degree sun for 12 hours…No thanks. We don’t need to subsidize small pools that relatively few people use.

  18. Biggeraintbetter says:

No, the big germs are at those larger pools. That’s why people like swimming in the smaller pools with all of their neighbors. How clean do you think the water will be in that giant splash park? About as clean as the water in the baby pool at Dunworth? I’d rather be at a small pool in my own neighborhood any day.

  19. Workinggirl828 says:

I resent your ungrateful comments. Maybe you could learn something from the meaning in WAR’S song “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”. The Dearborn Chamber of Commerce and city employees (i.e. Fire Department, Police Force) work hard to provide outstanding services to this community. Thirty-nine years ago, my family moved here from Detroit. We rooted ourselves in Dearborn, beautified our homes, and are very involved in the community. Let’s give the new renters/owners a chance to make a difference. I welcome and celebrate the diverse population coming into Dearborn. Dearborn is still and will continue to be a great place to obtain an excellent education, gain productive employment, reside, dine, imbibe, and be merry.

I am really disappointed that the craft area is gone this year. It seems like that would be additional revenue for the space rental and bring in additional people.
