The Not so Serious Election Eve Endorsement . . .
Former Dearborn mayoral candidate Tom Russell, a long-time reader and sometimes commentator on Deepsaidwhat.com, sent us a note the other day letting us know that he was endorsing Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. for re-election.
While Russell admits his endorsement might not be “particularly newsworthy” (and we’d agree), he does point out that the 82 votes he received campaigning in his fuzzy yellow bathrobe was 19 more than current Mayoral candidate Michael J. Prus when the two ran in the last election.
He also wanted to set the record straight that he was not “picking my nose” in the front page photograph in the Dearborn Press & Guide that has run several times in the last month. Russell says he was “just thinking”.

We’re not sure about that part Tom, but we will take your word on it.
Here is some of what Russell had to say about the photograph and his O’Reilly endorsement:
“There’s been a picture printed on the front page of the Dearborn Press and Guide a couple of times in the last month or so from the last election, featuring Mayor Jack O’Reilly, challenger Michael Prus, and some doofus on the end who looks like he might be picking his nose. I am that doofus. (No, I’m not picking my nose. Just thinking.)
A number of people have recognized me from the photo, and asked if I was running again. No, I’m not, but I think more people have asked me about my candidacy in the last month than ever asked me when I was actually running. And part of that is because I really ran as a lark, with full knowledge that my chances of winning were next to nil. I just tried to have fun with it, which is why I did a video comparing municipal financing to the arcade game BurgerTime, and why I campaigned wearing a fuzzy yellow bathrobe.”

Tom,
You might have won this time around. Many people want ANYONE else besides what we have. He talked big when he was Council President and got in the big chair and has done NOTHING. Have you heard about Dave Norwood? Corruption at City Hall? Rudeness at Council meetings? Setting a friend up to attack his enemy? Maybe you should stay current before trying to recycle him for Mayor again. I want better for my City.

With the mess Dearborn is in he “ran as a lark”?

Tom you may be a dufus, but what do you think we have for a Mayor now. Too bad for the residents of this town. I know you didn’t want to run against your boss, but you lacked what he lacks, and that was a pair of balls. Prus may not win for sure, but you will be surprised how many dissenting votes he gets. Watch how much fat boys enforsement costs the endorsees.

Big fella way to have a woman like Siwic fight your battles for you. You couldn’t face up to Thomas yourself, so you have someone try to fight your battles for you– shows us what kind of leader you really are.

Donna,
I never went to college and barely graduated from high school. I have no experience in government or leadership. I have no connections or contacts. I had (and still have) no money to run any kind of campaign. I have a pronounced stutter, am nervous around crowds, and tend to avoid conflicts/arguments. I have all the charisma of a sea-slug. If I had been running as a completely serious candidate, I would have frankly been delusional. So, yes, I ran as a lark– primarily to entertain myself and others.
All that being said– as I stated in my piece, which our gracious host was kind enough to link to– I did and do care deeply about my city, and though I tried to present my points in humourous ways– as chronicled in the “Tom for Mayor” video series– I think my points were valid ones.

Tom,
You should develop interests that keep you entertained.
Dearborn Residents,
Good luck — regardless the election results — with whatever the future holds for the city of Dearborn, Michigan.

Charles, your comment is nothing short of moronic. “You couldn’t face up to Thomas yourself”? What in god’s name would Jack have to fear from Doug Thomas? Doug hasn’t been relevant in any political capacity since? …I cant even say when. Like him or not and regardless of the competition, you do realize your takling about a mayor who won over 90% of the vote in the last special election and was the highest vote getter AS A FIRST TIMER in 1989 when Thomas also was first elected to the council. Alot of stuff can be said of O’Reilly but fearful of Doug “The Grand Floridian” Thomas is not one of them.

Tom – maybe you don’t take running as a candidate seriously but I certainly do. I don’t feel that it is a ‘game to be played with’. Although maybe you would have fit in with some of the other people that are running.
