Lynch’s Set to Reopen Dearborn Store This Summer

Nearly two years after closing its Dearborn store and putting its building up for sale, the owner of Lynch’s costume store is preparing to return for a summer reopening.

Unable to sell the building at 939 Howard,  just north of Michigan Avenue, the Lynch family could reopen its Dearborn location just in time to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The Lynch store was founded in 1949.

The Lynch family closed its Dearborn store in June 2007, citing paid parking as one of the reasons for departing, and put its building up for sale.  The family consolidated its Dearborn operations into its Livonia and Warren stores. But now, with the state’s economy in shambles, the family is said to be considering consolidating its operations in Warren into the Dearborn store. A sign in the window of the Dearborn store says it will reopen in May but employees say it will be a bit later into summer.

Whatever the reason for the change, we are happy to see the vacant Lynch building will soon be reopened and again selling a wide selection of Halloween costumes, along with the family’s trademark selections of dance attire, theatrical accessories, makeup and other supplies. Given that the Michaels Arts & Craft store on Michigan Avenue is now officially closed and its signs removed, having a store move back to Dearborn is most welcome.

This is good news! I suppose there is a small silver lining to the real estate market debacle. On another note, I believe I saw something earlier this year announcing that Nichols Ski and Patio was closing their Dearborn location… Recently, they seemed to still be open. Anyone with any recent updates or information?

In Howell’s the other night someone that stays on top of these type of issues informed me that since Lynch’s lease in their other location had run out and since their Dearborn location was bought and paid for in full, they decided to move back to their Dearborn location. Can LX, Pat or anyone substantiate this?

  3. Said Deep says:

Dave, Nichols Ski and Patio – in Dearborn for 50 plus years now – is thankfully staying put. In our book, they are the best ski shop in Michigan. What you might be hearing are their plans to lease additional space out in their building, similar to what they currently do with Bikesport.

Great news, indeed. Also happy to hear about Nichols. Class act ski store that has stuck with Dearborn. They’ve had to change their business model a few times to keep the doors open but that’s what a good business has to in these trying times.

  5. Larry says:

Lynchs doesn’t complain about paid parking now, because they are coming back to town with their tail between their legs.

We’ll take ’em any way we can get ’em.

Paid parking remains an issue. Lynches is moving back to Dearborn for economic reasons. Leases at their two other stores are up in April. So not owning the buildings means it makes smart business sense to move back to Dearborn in a building you actually own. I’m very, very happy they are doing this. It is good for Dearborn and good for other nearby businesses, too.

So, I guess that means all that talk about Hakim Fakoury wanting to buy the Lynch building was just that . . . talk. Didn’t someone say it was listed for $800,000 and no parking.

  9. Dearborn Dude says:

I’m going to have to change my nickname on here, someone has kinda copies it. Glad to see Lynchs coming home. There is plenty of parking across the street and the first 30 minutes are free. Get in, Get your stuff and get out. what could be better.

  10. George Kaminski says:

Soon that lot across the street will be metered and then the 30 minute free parking will no longer exist sorry to say.

  11. Michael D. Albano says:

Regardless of the reason or what changes there may be in parking across the street, knowing the help DTWD is so desperate for, let’s all be thankful that a business like Lynch’s has returned to Dearborn.

  12. Hopeful says:

    Glad Lynch’s will be back!

Can anyone provide ANY info about NEWMAN (Seinfeld voice!)??? Now Michaels is gone, and that strip mall is a mess. I would rather have tenants pay LOW rent than NO rent. Yahoo news said Rite Aid may go out of business…if so, all we have left there is good ol’ ACO.

I think paid parking is only an issue because everyone uses debit cards now days…the 50 cents is not an issue….just not having change on hand.

  13. Sean Hannity says:

Not having enough change initially is sometimes an issue. It is not usually as much of an issue as staying longer than planned and then forgetting to refill the meter, which results in a ticket and fine.

  14. Michael D. Albano says:

I have to agree with Sean. If one is prepared to go to DTWD as I often do, carrying change to initially fill meters that have the lowest rates around is not that big of a deal. It only becomes an issue when one who decides to stay longer and forgets to go out and refill the meter, which can end up resulting in a parking ticket and fine as it did with me one time.

While I accept full responsibilty for my failure to refil the meter, knowing that DTWD is losing businesses in droves IMHO it is not wise PR to also be penalizing people with tickets. Other expedient electronic options to pay when one leaves would perhaps be a much wiser and far more user friendly.

  15. George Kaminski says:

I agree with you Michael as I also visit downtown regularly and those parking tickets although inexpensive are a real hassle when one easily forgetd to fill their meter.
