Dearborn Suspends Public Service Day Rules

The City of Dearborn is suspending the parking rules for Public Service Days until the week of April 6-10.

That means residents will not be required to remove their parked vehicles from the street on their designated Public Service Days until the week of April 6-10.

The parking rules are being suspended because of the season’s heavy snowfall, which has made it difficult for residents to find alternative places to park on their Public Service Days.  For instance, residents who usually park in nearby alleys may not be able to do so because snow has piled up in those alleys.

The parking rules are suspended for Public Service Days that occur the week of Feb. 2-6, the week of Feb. 16-20, the week of March 2-6 and the week of March 16-20.

Parking enforcement will begin again the week of April 6-10.

Residents are still encouraged to remove their parked vehicles from the street if possible on those weeks. Removing parked vehicles allows city crews to perform services, such as supplemental snow plowing, more efficiently, because crews can reach curb to curb.

Be sure to change your brand new city calendar cause its wrong again.

  2. Howard Roark says:

The PSD seems like a concept that no one really wants. First, they announce it but don’t enforce the parking restrictions. Then they half-heartedly enforce it but don’t follow through with the promised maintenance. I’m almost convinced that it is just an excuse to generate revenue through increased parking tickets (and without going too far off-topic, changing from attendent lots to meters in DTWD seems like another opportunity to write more tickets). As they say, “follow the money”.

My impression is that we had better maintenance under the previous system. At least then, my street was swept every other week in the warm-weather months. Since the PSD schedule was enacted, sweeping is sporadic, leaf collection follows no published schedule, and I’ve never seen tree trimming done.

And speaking of leaf collection, if the City is looking for areas to cut costs, Mrs. Roark suggests eliminating streetside leaf collection. She argues that, beyond the cost, it never happens on schedule and that inevitably someone misses the date, leaving wet, messy leaves to rot in the street through the winter (or until they get plowed off with the snow). I’m finding it hard to argue against that idea.

I don’t know of too many other communities that provide the same service. And while there will be many residents who longingly remember how much better City services were “back when”, this isn’t the 1950s any more. City revenue is declining and we need to carefully examine where we want our tax dollars spent. For my money, I’d rather have snow plowed and streets salted than leaves collected. I can’t always carry salt for when roads are bad but I can bag my leaves myself.

Everything Howard Roark states makes sense.

Howard, I couldn’t agree with you more. It took the city months to get this program up and running and now suddenly the rules have changed. I agree with you that the streets were swept every other week and you could count on that. I don’t know who comes up with all of these brainstorm ideas but they better stop and think them over before they implement them. Sort of like the paid parking – one day you have a ‘person’ taking your money and the next it’s a meter.

I agree, we could do without the picking up the leaves.
Also why can’t in the winter months have the garbage picked up every other week like some commmunities have done, wouldn’t that save some money for a couple months?

I’m all for cutting some extravagant services provided it balances the budget or even better, lowers our taxes. But I think we receive some pretty durn good services for what we pay amigos.

  7. Yvette Hoganson says:

I totally agree with Howard. What ever happed to the signs that they were going to put up?

  8. Donna Hay says:

The signs have been up for awhile but you really have to look for them.
