Dearborn Council to Extend Crowley Pool Summer
The Dearborn City Council on Monday is expected to officially approve a plan to extend public swimming at Crowley Pool for an additional two weeks, a decision that could cost the city as much as $4,500, according to one city official.
The measure was approved at a council committee meeting Thursday evening and will become official during a vote at Monday’s meeting.
The Save our Pools neighborhood group that organized to save Crowley and five other neighborhood pools (Summer Stephens, Ten Eyck, Whitmore, Lapeer & Hemlock), was again the driving force to convince Council to keep Crowley open for an additional two weeks. Historically, the city has only kept Levagood and Ford Woods open until Labor Day.
While the city needs to do some fiscal belt tightening this year, this was one check approval elected officials weren’t going to deny.

Crowley pool opened 18 days late this year due to a repair issue. The city was asked by SOP to just extend Crowley’s season 18 days…which they will tonight. SOP also rented additional pool time to Lapeer, Whitmore, Ten Eyck, Summer Stephens and Crowley pools so that the local families can enjoy the weather a little longer along with providing more life guard hours (pay check).

Thanks to SOP. If it was not for their work, the city would just divert recreation funds to such grand schemes as a “welcome center” and plans for a convention center. The city of Dearborn needs more people like SOP and less worthless political leaches like the Mayor Puddin Pants and “Sorry I am ten minutes late” Sareini.

I don’t understand how it will cost 4,500 when the pool was closed for 18 days at the beginning of the season so the lifeguards were not paid etc… for that period. Why wasn’t the money they saved paying the lifeguards then used to pay them now? Plus it is open less hours than it would have been if it’d opened in June. Once again the figures don’t seem to add up to me. Please correct me if you know exactly what this 4,500 is paying for. They keep throwing the 132,000 per year operating cost out there for all the pools including Dunworth which costs way more. I don’t understand how it can cost 4,500 to keep Crowley open for 3 hours per day for 2.5 weeks?

I said in a different post that I was greeted in a strangely hostile manner by a representative for Dearborn in a meeting. Usually, I’m quick to blame myself, but I genuinely believe I did nothing to provoke such an aggressive response. Other than my experience, I can’t say I have a lot of first hand dealings with “King Jack” or “his cronies” or knowledge about what they have or haven’t done, but the experience I had definitely ruffled my feathers, so to speak, and made me think I should be more aware, more involved, and pay better attention to government. Please let me know if you’re organizing a group of citizens geared towards helping Dearborn in some, or any, way.

Sandy it is great that you are now taking interest and noticing the attitudes of some of the representatives of the city. I think the most important thing anyone can do is start attending the city council meetings every month,make the people that are suppose to be representing us see us there watching the type of decisions they are making. We have to attend more city meetings to hold them accountable and to remind them that they work for us!
