Strut Raises $65,000 for Dearborn Animal Shelter

Dearborn Animal Shelter's 4th Annual Mutt Strut May 16The weather may not have been perfect in the morning, but it seems a record number of people took part in the 4th annual Mutt Strut on May 16, raising some $65,000 for the Dearborn Animal Shelter in the process.

The short video below captures some of the excitment around the strut.

We have said this before on this site, the annual walk is a good way to get some much needed foot traffic into west Dearborn, as many participants are not from Dearborn.

It is the type of event our downtown Dearborn needs to see more of. Take a look at what downtown Plymouth does on a regular basis. That city’s entire spring/summer if filled with outdoor events that get people downtown.

All proceeds from the walk went to the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, which supports Shelter operations and community-and animal-related programs. The Friends is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Another great job by the Animal Shelter!!! They brought in money which is the most important thing but also brought in foot traffic to Dearborn. Could someone please tell me why any of the people that participated (that lived outside the city) would want to come back to walk up and down Michigan Ave again. It doesn’t make any difference what Plymouth or any other community does – this is Dearborn and we do not have or it looks like will never have what the other cities have – SHOPPING. At the council meeting last night they approved $1.00 for parking at the Farm Market from 8:00-2:00 so people could come to the market and spend the day downtown. I guess you could go to the market and bar-hop for the rest of the time. I should add this only pertains to gated lots. One day events won’t do the trick.

I have a brilliant idea for next year. The Animal Shelter could partner with one of the local animal hospitals or PetSmart for an “afterglow” to which the Mutt Strut participants and their dogs would be able to mingle and maybe enjoy appetizers (human and canine) and drinks, for an extra charge. Otherwise, there is no way local establishments could allow dogs in for shopping, drinking, eating, unless there were special permits issued…

speaking of, when will the businesses start allowing dogs in? I had my dog at the Post, outside, and we were thrown out by an inspector. is it really illegal to have a dog in the outside seating?
