Salamey Defeats Wygonik for 19th District Court

Sam Salamey
The race for judge in Dearborn’s 19th District Court was supposed to be a close one but when the votes were all tallied, it was Dearborn attorney Sam Salamey defeating incumbent Judge Richard Wygonik by more than 4,000 votes.
Salamey pulled in an impressive 18,150 votes to Wygonik’s 14,020 votes.
Salamey worked hard, going door-to-door to most homes in Dearborn and picking up a key endorsement from Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. What weight the mayor’s endorsement had on this race isn’t known but the Wygonik camp was unhappy when the mayor made the endorsement earlier this year.
Wygonik was appointed to the bench in 2005 and Dearborn voters retained him for a full six-year term in November 2006.

This is a good thing for the 19th District Court and the citizens
of Dearborn. As a Police Officer for the city, i have seen over the
years the outright lack of respect for the Police Officers and soft
handedness that Judge Wygonik metted out from the bench. If all of
his lenient sentences would of been publicized, this election wouldnt
of been as close as it was. I hope that Judge Salamey will take a
hard stance on crime committed in the city so the message gets out
again that you dont want to come to Dearborn and do your crime
because you will go to jail, and not just get TIME SERVED which Judge
Wygonik was famous for.

Over the past few months, with all the residential break-ins and home invasions, I’ve kept a much closer eye on the sentences handed down by Dearborn judges in these type of crimes. It REALLY shocked me when numerous articles I’ve read show that repeat offenders caught in Dearborn committing these type of crimes were given such low bail/bond, and then released. Therefore, I agree with concerned cop that hopefully Judge Salamey will send a strong message to criminals who will learn that if they commit a crime in Dearborn, they will be locked up and not be free to roam our streets committing more of these horrible crimes…
