Biggby Coffee, Cedars Coney Now Open in Dearborn

Biggby Coffee fans now have a new place to get a jolt of caffeine each morning.

Biggby owner Steve Swinney

Dearborn’s newest coffee shop officially opened Tuesday and for the remainder of this week the new Biggby store, 22445 Michigan Ave., is offering a free cup of coffee (any size) to anyone who stops in.

Dearborn resident and owner Steve Swinney was all smiles when we stopped by on Tuesday. The place looks great and we wish him the best of luck in his new venture.

The coffee shop also will offer outdoor seating, which it will share with another new business that opened right next door, the new Cedars Coney Island & Grille

Sam Berro and his father, Ali, opened the new restaurant several weeks ago and the two have done a great job remodeling the space. The Berro family and Swinney are sharing the costs associated with building the new outdoor seating area (how is that for teamwork!). And with free, easy-in and easy-out parking, both should do well in their Norm Newman-owned building.

“We have tried to make our place feel as cozy as possible,” said Sam Berro, a Fordson High School grad.

On Friday and Saturday nights, Berro says his restaurant will be open 24 hours to cater to the local bar crowd, at least for now.

We wish both new businesses the best of luck.

I haven’t been in Biggby’s yet but will soon. Cedar’s has a good menu variety, excellent service and great food.

Congrats to them both! I hope both places succeed! I wonder if they can provide any info on how it was dealing with Newman since so many people have complained about him?

SO glad I can get my Biggby fix in Dearborn now. I live near the Allen Park location and love the drive-through, but this one is convenient too!

Cedars has GREAT food, and talking with Sam and Ali was really impressive. They’ve really put a lot of heart into this, and I hope for the best for them. I’m really excited about the patio they’re putting in! I’m so happy to have a Coney Island (plus more) around the corner.

I’ve only been to the new Biggby once, but will probably be visiting more often. I wish they had a drive-through, but the Coffee Express (put your money in the box, grab a cup, and go) works.

It’s so nice to see life throughout the “dining strip” again. I hope all the restaurants new and old – all of which are great – can co-exist successfully. I think they’ve all got different niches, so my hopes are high.

Now if only somebody would move into the large strip mall. Has anybody pitched the idea to Trader Joe’s? There aren’t any within a half-hour of Dearborn or downriver, so I think there’s a good business case to be made. I think it could coexist peacefully with Merchant’s and Westborn.

What’s Up Dawg, despite the awkward name, looked like another restaurant with a lot of heart behind it. I’ve seen the proprietor selling hot dogs in the parking lot of the CVS before the restaurant was open, but haven’t gotten to try them yet.

what’s up dawg is outstanding on every level…business has been so good since they opened, he may have already outgrown the location…

I visited both Bigby and Cedar’s this past week and was very impressed with both Steve and Sam’s service and hospitality. I encourage all the locals to stop by and try them atleast once.

Hopefully, all the business, both new and old, will stay in that location; what’s up with all the Newman-owned structures anyway, and why can’t the city do something to change his negative business practices that are affecting our whole area?
